How to hang a 5-bar gate between posts
This layout allows the gate to be opened 90 degrees in both directions. If the gate is left open, you should use a drop bolt with a receiver socket in the ground to secure the gate in place. This layout can be prone to twisting because the bottom of the gate is not resting against the post when closed.
You will need:
- Adjustable double strap field hinge set
- Central closing filed gate catch
- 2 x gate posts
- Drop bolt and socket set (if the gate will be left open or hung as a pair)
Hanging double gates between posts
If you have a pair of gates between posts both gates should have drop bolts with receiver sockets and a throw over loop to secure the gates closed when shut. A 15mm gap should be left in the centre between the gates.
Drop bolts should also be used if the gate is left open to secure it at 90 degrees to the gate post. This will help to prevent the gates warping and twisting as they weather.
How to hang a 5-bar gate on the face of posts
This layout allows the gate to be opened 180 degrees inwards. If the gate is left open a drop bolt with receiver socket in the ground should always be used to secure the gate in place. The gates should only be left open at 90 degrees.
You will need:
- Adjustable double strap field hinge set
- Spring latch or auto gate latch
- 2 x Gate posts
- Drop bolt and socket set (if being left open or hung as a pair)
Hanging double gates on the face of posts
If you’re hanging a pair of gates on the face of the posts both gates should have drop bolts with receiver sockets and a throw over loop to secure the gates closed when shut. A 15mm gap should be left in the centre between the gates.
Drop bolts should also be used if the gate is left open to secure it at 90 degrees to the gate post. This will help to prevent the gates warping and twisting as they weather.
What hinges and fittings do I need to hang a gate?
All field gates should be fitted with appropriate hinges, latches, and drop bolts.
Adjustable double strap field hinge sets should always be used with wooden gates. These allow you to adjust the gate position as they weather over time. Simply use a spanner to tighten or loosen the hinge bolt to lift or drop the gate. These are available with either hook on plates, or hook to drive/hook to bolt.
- Adjustable hinge set size guide:
Gates 3ft-5ft wide: 12” Adjustable double strap hinges
Gates 6ft-10ft wide: 18” Adjustable double strap hinges
Gates 10ft+ wide: 24” Adjustable double strap hinges
There are several gate latch options for wooden field gates.
For gates hung between posts:
- Spring fastener set with central closing catch
- Shoot bolt
For gates hung on the face of posts:
- Self-locking gate latch kit with striker
- Spring fastener set with staple catch
- Spring fastener set with drive catch
For gates hung together:
- Throw over loops
Drop bolts are essential for any wooden gates being left open or hung as a pair especially if hung between the posts. These come in 12” and 18” and as kits that include throw over loops.

What’s the best gate treatment?
All our wooden field gates are made from pressure treated timber to protect against rot and insects. To further enhance the protection of your gates against weathering, we recommend using Restol UV.
Restol UV Oil has the following benefits:
- Protection against the sun
- Protection against moisture
- Water repellent properties
- Protection against ageing
What’s the best way to store a gate before installation?
If your gates arrive a couple of days or weeks before being fitted it’s important to store them correctly to prevent warping. The gates should be laid on flat ground out of the sun with bearers underneath to support the frames and prevent twisting and warping.
