Fence Repair Spurs – Which is best concrete or metal?

Repair spurs are designed to fix broken timber posts in an existing fence, which prevents you from having to replace the entire fence. Originally just made from concrete we have recently seen new metal versions brought to the market, so which is best? Below we outline the advantages and disadvantages to help you decide which is better suited for your garden fence.

Concrete repair spur

The original fence post repair spur, these have been around for years and are generally available in a variety of lengths and sizes and made from concrete with reinforcement roads throughout.

Advantages:

  • There are more options with different sizes, therefore you are more likely to find the repair spur that suits what you’re looking for.
  • They are made to last up to 25 years.
  • Concrete is resistant to rot, decay and rusting.
  • They are suitable for high fences where there may be a lot of wind.
  • They are very strong, meaning that they can withstand heavy loads.

Disadvantages:

  • Installation can be difficult, this is because one half of the spur needs to be dug and concreted into the ground with the other half needing to be lined up with the post.
  • If not installed correctly the holes in the post may not be in the correct place, meaning that the post will not be supported correctly.
  • They are quite heavy, therefore are harder to move around and transport.
  • Harder to store as they take up a lot of space.
  • They vary in cost but tend to be more expensive than metal spurs due to the size variations.

Overall both concrete and metal repair spurs are great options for the job of repairing fence posts, both with similar strengths and durability. If your looking for an easier quick fix that is less visible the metal ones would be quicker to instal due to there size and weight and less visible once in place while providing the same strength as concrete. While the concrete ones offer greater flexibility with the variety of sizes available.
